Independent INTELLiPOWER PVA analysis presented at ESICM LIVES 2026

Investigators used Deep Breath to classify 461,931 breaths from an international randomised crossover ventilation trial, and presented the asynchrony findings at Poster Station B in Lisbon.

At ESICM LIVES 2026 in Lisbon, independent investigators presented a secondary analysis of the INTELLiPOWER randomised crossover trial: patient–ventilator asynchrony (PVA) during automated closed-loop ventilation versus conventional ventilation. The talk was given at Poster Station B in the Acute Respiratory Failure 15 session. Laura Buiteman-Kruizinga (Amsterdam) presented.

The official abstract names Deep Breath (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) as the software used to detect and classify PVAs automatically from ventilator waveforms. The Deep Breath team is grateful to the researchers for trusting our platform with randomised-trial data, and for discussing it with the European intensive-care community.

What was analysed

  • Secondary analysis of INTELLiPOWER — an international, multicentre, randomised crossover trial of INTELLiVENT-ASV versus conventional ventilation
  • 66 critically ill invasively ventilated patients (71% male; median age 65 years), mostly admitted for respiratory failure
  • 461,931 breaths
  • Asynchrony index (AI) and individual PVA types classified with Deep Breath

What the investigators reported

AI was higher with INTELLiVENT-ASV than with conventional ventilation (median 3.32 [0.80–10.78] vs 3.01 [0.63–7.50]; rate ratio 1.22, 95% CI 1.12–1.33, p < 0.001). Delayed triggering, ineffective effort, and reverse triggering were higher with automated ventilation. The investigators concluded that INTELLiVENT-ASV increased the incidence of patient–ventilator asynchronies in this secondary analysis.
